Elderly Care Project 2016

ecp main pic

The Elderly Care Project (ECP) is one of IDC North Easts longest running Community Welfare Projects. After realising the Elderly were being neglected in the society we live in today and the shocking facts about elderly people dying in the winter as they could not stay warm, we decided to do something about it.

Our Community Welfare Team regularly visits the elderly at their centres. At the start of each month we visit a centre in Greater Walker, where our team has been visiting for the last couple of years.

In 2016, we have been approached by AGE UK to visit their centre on a regular basis. In March we started our visits at their centre in Denton burn and sre looking forward to making many more visits.

“There is an average of 26,700 winters’ deaths in England and Wales over the last ten years. Each winter, 1 older person dies needlessly every 7 minutes from the cold – that’s 200 deaths a day that could be prevented.” (Age UK)

This is an astounding figure and something that should concern us as Muslims. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Man is doomed and a loser if Allah does not put compassion for mankind in his heart.” (al-Silsilah al-Saheehah)

It is from values of Islam that we should have compassion and mercy for those within our community, especially those who are considered as vulnerable and in need.
Among those who fall into this category are the elderly within our communities; regardless of their colour, religion, gender, the elderly are at risk during the winter months.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said, “He is not one of us who does not show mercy to our young ones and respect our old ones.” (Tirmidhi) Therefore, it is incumbent upon us to show compassion towards the elderly as a sign of mercy in our heart and as a sign of caring for those in need.

With more budget cuts taking place every year, the plight of the elderly has sparked a renewed interest amongst many organisations and individuals across the UK.
Many have emphasised that the elderly are not receiving the respect and dignity they deserve.

This year IDC North East went to visit the Elderly to distribute free scarves, thermal socks, hats and gloves again.

Elderly Care Project 2015

IDC North East has had a brilliant 2014 and to finish it off we are launching our Winter Campaign.

Throughout 2014, the IDC team has been meeting up with the elderly in our city, keeping them company, playing games and helping out at the local community centres.

THIS WINTER is our Winter Warm Campaign – Warming the elderly by gifting them with YOUR donations! Blankets, Gloves, thermal socks…our team has purchased these items with your donations to give to those who need it.

Last year, Lyn Johnson ( Chief Excutive of AGE UK Newcastle) said ‘We would like to Thank You for the donation of warm clothing and duvets to AGE UK Newcastle for your winter warmth campaign’.

Once again, We are collecting NEW blankets, thermals, hot water bottles or cash (to purchase those items) and in December, we will be distributing YOUR donations among the elderly people of Newcastle to help keep them warm this winter!

To make a donation go to https://mydonate.bt.com/events/elderlycareproject/

To drop off NEW blankets, thermals, hot water bottles or any other items that may be of benefit, please come to our Newcastle Office: 2 Shipley Avenue, Fenham, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE4 9RA.

Elderly Care Project 2014

real edl

The Elderly Care Project is a social initiative started by IDC in 2013. The aim originally was to help keep elderly members of the community warm in the winter.

However due to popular demand from elderly members of the Greater Walker Community Centre, we make monthly social visits to see them.

Throughout 2014, IDC North East will continue to support and care for the elderly members in our community right here in the North East. The Real EDL (Elderly Defence League) are group of IDC brothers and sisters who take time out each month and go and visit the elderly for a catch up and general chit chat.

As it worked so well in Newcastle, the Teesside team took it up themselves to create and run their own Elderly Care Project.

To date, as well as the monthly socials, we also have conducted curry nights and even a mosque visit.

IDC Teesside arranged a curry night to take place at the care home for the residents and the staff. The members of IDC who attended served the food which was donated from Billingham Balti House. The night went well as there was a very good response and also good engagement.

Every month, the IDC team reaches out to the elderly community as friendly company and care. Giving respect to those who helped build this country.

Project leader Faraz Hussain says ‘It is a very rewarding and heart warming experience sitting and chatting with the elderly. We have been doing this for some time now and the people who meet have opened up to us. They really look forward to our visits at the start of every month’.

IDC will be facilitating a mosque visit with members from the centre soon.
