“(The righteous are those) who feed the poor, the orphan and the captive for the love of God, saying: ‘We feed you for the sake of God Alone; we seek from you neither reward nor thanks.'” – The Holy Quran, 76:8-9
According to the Guardian, there was a reported 26% increase in homeless people in four years in England (25 June 2014). In the North, homeless numbers have risen 8% over the past three years.
Inspired by helping the needy, the IDC North East Community Welfare team decided to organise a monthly Feed the Homeless project. The Project has been running nicely over the last 18 months and we have built a great rapport with homeless people in Newcastle City Centre.
The volunteers have established this project in Newcastle City Centre and the homeless people look forward to our visits as they get a nice hot meal of Chicken Byrianni.
In 2016, the Community Welfare team is looking to develop this project in Newcastle City Centre by introducing a fortnightly outreach program.

The brothers came out in force in September and stepped it up a gear at this month’s Feed the Homeless project, and showed by action the importance of looking after those in need in Islam. Sheikh Riyad from Kuwait who was visiting at this time also took part!

The IDC team revived the Feed the Homeless project this year in August and are running this every month, working alongside the team at Destiny Streetworx, they bought food, drink and spare clothing to give to those who need it.
As part of our initiatives during Ramadan 2014, the team have been picking up any leftover food at some of the local masjids (Newcastle Central Mosque and Newcastle University Islamic Society)…and dropped it off to The People’s Kitchen to Feed The Homeless.

Feedback from the community:
The event was successful & the objectives were achieved. There was a positive response from both the homeless & People’s Kitchen volunteers & we effectively managed in feeding the homeless. The people involved had a positive encounter with a Muslim & a brief insight into our ethos were introduced to IDC North East.
